The assumption is that a heavier fabric is a warmer fabric, so heavyweight cotton must be a winter fabric. That is about half right, and the wrong half is the half that decides whether you are comfortable.

Weight is a density measurement: how much fiber sits in a square meter of cloth. It says little about how that cloth handles heat, because heat comfort is mostly moisture and airflow, and weight is only one input into either.

What actually decides how hot a garment feels

Four things, in roughly this order of importance.

1. What the fiber does with your sweat

Cotton is absorbent. It takes moisture into the fiber rather than leaving it on the surface, and damp cotton against warm skin cools you as that water evaporates. That is why cotton feels good in dry heat. The same property turns on you once you sweat faster than the fabric dries: saturated cotton stops cooling, starts clinging and stays wet a long time.

2. How the fabric is knitted

Structure decides whether air moves through the cloth at all. An open jersey passes air. A dense double knit, or anything with a looped or brushed inner face, holds it. Two fabrics of the same weight can behave very differently here: a brushed back feels warmer than a flat one at identical GSM. We broke down knit structures in what "100% cotton" doesn't tell you.

3. The air gap between fabric and skin

This is the part most people have backwards. Still air insulates. Moving air cools. A garment pressed flat against skin conducts heat out of you and traps a thin layer of humid air with nowhere to go. A looser garment holds a larger gap that vents every time you move.

The consequence is counterintuitive: a loose cut in heavier cotton can run cooler than a fitted cut in a lighter one, because it keeps moving air across your skin while the tight one holds it still. Fit beats weight more often than not.

4. Color and sun

In direct sun a dark garment absorbs more radiant heat than a light one. Loose and dark can still beat tight and light, because that heat has a gap to cross first. In shade the effect is close to irrelevant.

The same logic in cold weather

Heavyweight cotton does well in dry cold as a middle layer, where its density slows heat loss and it is not being asked to move sweat. It is a poor base layer for anything strenuous in the cold, for the same reason it struggles in humid heat: once damp it stays damp, and damp fabric pulls heat out of you fast. That is a fiber property, not a quality problem, and it applies to cheap cotton and good cotton alike.

What to do with this

  • Judge a summer piece by structure and fit before weight. An open knit with room in it will beat a dense knit cut close to the body.
  • Read GSM as a shape specification, not a season specification. Weight buys structure and drape, which is the argument we made in what heavyweight cotton actually means.
  • For heat plus effort, wear something that dries fast. Cotton is for heat you are mostly sitting still in.
  • Dry a heavy piece fully between wears. Cotton that never quite dries feels colder on and turns sour sooner, and our cotton care guide covers the method.

FAQ

Is 100% cotton good for hot weather?

In dry heat, yes. Cotton absorbs sweat and cools you as it evaporates. In humid heat or during exercise it saturates, stops cooling and stays wet, which is when synthetics or linen do a better job.

Is heavyweight cotton too hot for summer?

Not automatically. A loose heavyweight piece can be cooler than a fitted lightweight one because it keeps an air gap that ventilates. Weight matters less than how close the fabric sits to your skin and whether the knit lets air through.

Does a higher GSM mean a warmer garment?

Only when everything else is equal, which it rarely is. Knit structure, surface finish and fit all move the result more than the number does. A brushed 200 GSM fabric will feel warmer than a flat 240 GSM one.

Is linen cooler than cotton?

Usually, in humid heat. Linen releases moisture faster and its stiffer fibers hold the cloth off the skin instead of clinging to it. In dry heat, and for softness, the gap narrows considerably.

Can you wear an oversized set in summer?
